What is Global Citizenship Education?

Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is an educational process aimed at increasing awareness and understanding of the rapidly changing, interdependent and unequal world in which we live. GCE inspires global solidarity by supporting people to fully realise their rights, responsibilities and potential as global citizens in order to take meaningful action for a just and sustainable world.

GCE involves engaging our Head, Heart and Hands. Therefore Global Citizenship Education has 5 key components; Knowledge, Skills, Values and Attitudes, Taking Action, and Methodologies.

To understand the importance of GCE in youth work, take a look at organisations such as WorldWiseSchools, Global Village Schools, or NYCI and learn how you can begin to accept the importance of youth workers in inspiring a GCE approach in young people’s actions.

  • Can you think of a project you can deliver with young people that engages their head, heart, and hands?
  • Could you implement this project with the young people you work with?
